As with any writing, it reflects not only the author's intention, but also the capacities (if not, indeed, the character) of the Reader he is addressing, by detailing ordinary customs and procedures which that imagined person would have to leave behind in order to follow this way of reading, which the author obviously assumes will be unfamiliar.
